Could it be ADHD?
At Equilibrium Psychology, we offer adult ADHD assessments that are thorough, evidence-based, and streamlined.
Our easy process is designed to give you the clarity you need—without the inflated price tag or long waiting times. We focus on what matters: identifying ADHD traits and understanding their impact on your life.
We offer a pay-as-you-go model where you pay for your therapist’s time at our standard rates (see the prices and rebates page) which allows you the flexibility of discontinuing the assessment or delaying completion of it should you wish to.
Get answers. Get support. Get back in balance.
The process:
PART 1
Free screening questionnaire
When you enquire our receptionist will send you a quick questionnaire and book you in with our intake counsellors for a matching call. Your questionnaire answers will be reviewed and if there is enough indication of possible ADHD they will help you book in your Assessment sessions with a psychologist. Even if ADHD is unlikely based on your responses you are welcome to book in with one of our psychologists to formulate an alternative treatment plan to help you address your concerns.
PART 2
Diagnostic Interview
Your psychologist will take you through a set of structured questions based on the diagnostic criteria for ADHD called the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM (SCID). These questions will provide you with an opportunity to tell us about your symptoms in a structured way. This interview will generally take 2 sessions and is billed at our normal hourly rate (see fees and rebates page).
PART 3
Psychometric Assessment*
After your first diagnostic interview appointment you will be given access to online questionnaires that you will complete and return to the clinic. You will also need to get someone who knows you well (e.g. a parent, a sibling, a partner) to complete these questionnaires too. Your psychologist will then analyse the data from both sources.
The information provided in the questionnaires will help us understand what your unique challenges are. Every person with ADHD can have a slightly different presentation and it’s important to understand where your own relative strengths and weaknesses are in order to create a useful management strategy.
The specific questionnaires we use are the Conners’ Adult ADHD Rating Scale, 2nd Edition (CAARS2) and the Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale (WFIRS).
*Access to these questionnaires is charged equivalent to an hour session to allow your psychologist time to score and analyse the data you provide
PART 4
Data compilation and one-page outcome letter writing*
Your psychologist will review all the data they have collected and write a one-page letter summarising the findings and giving recommendations for future symptom management. Although no guarantee can be made, this letter is, in most cases, sufficient for you to see a psychiatrist for medication.
*Charged equivalent to 2 hours
PART 5
1-Hour Feedback Session
You will meet with your psychologist, who will explain the results of the testing and help you plan future steps. If you want to continue to work with a psychologist on better managing your symptoms, your psychologist will work with you on a treatment plan and book you in for some individual or group skills training sessions. This session is charged at our normal session rates.

Frequently asked questions
-
Our ADHD assessment is a structured process that includes an initial screening, validated psychometric measures, a diagnostic interview, and a feedback session. You’ll also receive a concise outcome letter summarising the result
-
No. We can do the assessment to determine if the symptoms you are experiencing fit the profile of ADHD but you will need to get a referral from your GP to see a psychiatrist in order to obtain ADHD medication. We recommend you do this at the beginning of your assessment journey with us as wait times to see a psychiatrist can often be long.
During feedback of your assessment findings, your psychologist will be able to outline to you how psychological treatment can help increase your day-to-day functioning, which can be undertaken in addition to or in place of medication.
-
Many clinics include these tests by default, but research shows they do not reliably distinguish between ADHD and other presentations (e.g., anxiety, depression). At Equilibrium, we focus on using only evidence-based tools that directly contribute to diagnosis and treatment planning—saving you both time and money.
-
Yes. An informant—ideally someone who knows you well now or knew you as a child (e.g., a parent, sibling, or partner)—is asked to complete a questionnaire. This helps us evaluate functioning across settings and over time.
-
We provide an outcome letter that is likely to be suitable for medical or educational documentation. Although we can’t guarantee any outcomes based on the letter you will receive, the tools we use are widely known and respected.
If you need a formal diagnostic report in your unique circumstances or liaison with education/workplace settings, we can provide that as an optional add-on charged at an additional fee.
-
It is important that we take the time to ensure that any diagnosis you are given is accurate and evidence based. As such, you will need to go through the full assessment process outlined above before getting a diagnosis. We can not provide you with a letter or diagnosis if you discontinue the assessment part-way.
-
Although you can go through the process on a step-by-step basis we recommend that you book all your appointments in advance to maximise efficiency. If this is done, the entire assessment process can be completed within as little as 3–4 weeks, depending on your psychologist’s availability.
Unfortunately there are often long wait times to get into see a psychiatrist for potential medication. We recommend you get your GP to refer you and book an appointment with your psychiatrist before you begin your assessment with us so that you don’t have to wait too long between the results of your assessment and your appointment with a psychiatrist to trial medication.
-
No. Even if you receive a diagnosis of ADHD you do not have to manage it with medication. Stimulant medication in combination with skills based psychological sessions is considered the optimal management strategy for ADHD symptoms. However if you do not want to trial medication our psychologists will respect your wishes and can offer you sessions to help you develop your own management strategies regardless.
